Benefits of certification
There are many benefits and advantages of becoming a certified medical coder. Some are monetary and some are not.
- Higher Salary- According to the US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary for Medical Records and Health Information Technicians (which includes medical coders) was $32,350 in May 2010. However, the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) stated in their 2011 salary survey that the average wage for a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) was approximately $46,800.
- Greater Marketability- When applying for jobs and promotions, employers may favor a certified medical coder vs a non-certified coder. Having that extra credential on your resume may help you stand out amongst other applicants.
- Proves Proficiency- To become certified requires passing a certification exam. When employers see that you have earned a certification, they automatically know that you possess the skills required to accurately perform the job as a medical coder.
The best way to prepare for a certification exam is training.
